Chouteaus Landing - Then

Chouteau's Landing Then

One of the oldest neighborhoods in St. Louis, Chouteau's Landing emerged as a dynamic riverfront community and pivotal commercial hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Home to an array of business and industry-from burlap bags to pickles, Chouteau's Landing was so integral to the St. Louis economy that all but four structures were rebuilt after the devastating tornado of 1896. Chouteau's Landing further progressed with the 1917 installation of MacArthur Bridge and continued to prosper until the introduction of modern interstates in the 1950s dissected the terrain and left the district to fall into urban decay.
