Chouteau's Landing

arch-urbanq.jpg In August 2007, a Danforth Foundation study revealed a need for the St. Louis Arch Grounds to connect with surrounding neighborhoods and be more accessible to the public. In what ways do you think the Chouteau’s Landing redevelopment project can assist in making these connections, and how would you prioritize them in regards to the entire Chouteau’s Landing project?

I would prioritize streetscape improvements, such as well-lit streets and side walks that make the area appear safer.

It definitely needs to look safer, and cleaner. Even though there aren’t any store fronts yet, the entire area could look less dead. The mural project on 4th St. was a brilliant idea, and I think the same idea should be spread around all of Chouteau’s Landing.

A HUGE, long term project that’s been in my head for a while is a trolley connecting north and south downtown, similar to the idea Joe Edwards is behind from the History Museum to The Loop. This could be from the grounds north of the arch (Union power plant, bike trail, Lumiere Casino), to Laclede’s Landing, to Busch Stadium, to Chouteau’s Landing, and Soulard, maybe even up to the Brewery. It would for sure be populated during the sports season, connecting residential living, entertainment, and restaurants, and add a LOT of character to Downtown. It’s a big project, but if there’s enough funding and support behind it from different city supporters, I think it could be a possibility.

More short term changes would just be making it possible to WALK between these areas and convincing non-urban-ites that you’re safe doing so.

walking is the key. if people can’t walk there and/or find their way there, this is a bust. front load the district near the elevated highway section. people would rather walk under 40 if they see activity rather then a sea of parking. signage from busch stadium will help and all along the rest of 4th street.
